As we look towards how we can have the biggest impact moving forward, we have decided to retire the delivery program so we can put all our energy and focus into adding Fridge locations across the country. March 2020
On March 1, 2020, Farmer’s Fridge was operating about 400 “Fridges” – refrigerated vending machines in placing like airports, hospitals, universities and office buildings – selling salads, bowls, wraps and snacks.
As the pandemic arrived and people across the world sheltered in place under the stay-at-home order, about 80% of those Fridges closed down overnight, as the lights turned off in the buildings that housed them.
What do we do?
Our team at Farmer’s Fridge was tasked with a challenge – how can we sell fresh meals to folks while they’re staying safe at home? While it may seem obvious in retrospect, we had no idea if we could pull off shipping our food straight to customer’s homes. We didn’t know how the packaging would work, how we’d get it all delivered, or most importantly, what state the food would be in when it arrived. But we did know we needed to figure it out, or else our business – and the jobs of our 200+ employees – would be in jeopardy.
Farmer's Fridge Delivery Is Born
Within a week, we had the website up and running to accept home delivery, and multiple rounds of test orders being processed. On March 18, 2020, we delivered the first orders to real (!) customers’ homes. Each order was delivered by hand by one of our drivers – the same folks who just a few weeks earlier were stocking all our Fridge locations each day.
The delivery business grew quickly over the course of 2020. We began to add new states and cities to our delivery footprint, experiment with box size and how many items we could fit, and eventually switched from our hand-delivery model to using a third-party shipping carrier so we could offer the delivery service to more people. By 2021, we were delivering 2,000+ orders a week to 42 states.
The Future Looks Bright 😎
As the world re-opened, we were able to slowly begin opening Fridges again as airports, universities and office buildings filled back up. Not only did we reopen the Fridges we had before the pandemic, but we added tons of new locations – in new markets like Los Angeles, Detroit, St. Louis, Dallas, Houston and San Diego. Today we have over 500 Fridges in 20 cities across the United States, and are adding dozens each month.
As we look towards the future, we’re thinking and talking a lot about how we can best achieve our mission of making fruits and vegetables more accessible and approachable for everyone. And we decided that there are a lot of companies out there that will ship healthy meals to our doorstep. There are NOT a lot of companies that offer fresh, healthy options on the go.

The delivery program has been extremely successful, and we could not be more grateful to the 100,000 customers who have ordered over the past two years. But as we look towards how we can have the biggest impact moving forward, we have decided to retire the delivery program so we can put all our energy and focus into adding Fridge locations across the country.

Will the Delivery program ever return?
We’re so thankful for the support our delivery program customers have given us through the pandemic. While we don’t have any plans to get back into the home delivery business in the near future, we hope to remain a part of your life via a Fridge or retail location or even after retirement.
What should I do about the gift card I’ve purchased?
You can use your gift card to place a delivery order until 12/05. After our program ends, we will begin to issue refunds back to the gift card purchaser to their original form of payment. You will receive an email showing your refund when it has been completed.
When will you be in my state?
Soon, we hope! We don’t have an exact timeframe for full US expansion but we’re working hard to get our Fridges in as many states as possible. You can continue to check our site or follow us on Instagram for the latest updates!
Do you offer franchises?
Thank you for your support of Farmer’s Fridge and interest in franchising! At this time, Farmer’s Fridge is a privately owned and operated business, and we do not franchise our machines.
Do you have any other delivery “to your door” solutions?
